Dear family and friends:
It is with heavy heart that we are letting you know that our father, grandfather, husband and friend, Dr. Earl Jacobs, passed away in Pasadena at 2 a.m. Thursday, July 3. He was 77 years old on July 14. His passing was peaceful as his body ultimately gave out in his sleep.
Earl, born in Chicago, was the son of Martin and Elsie Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs obtained his doctorate in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1960. He was chair of physics at California State University, Los Angeles, when it first opened.
In addition to being a professor and nuclear physicist, he was an active businessman for many years and created several patents. During his later years, he was a volunteer and resident in Idyllwild. He loved his home in the mountains.
In his final months, he was surrounded by the love and caring of his family and friends, who all made time to be with him.
He spoke kindly and fondly of his time here on this Earth, his experiences, relationships and struggles. Although the last two months were a challenge for him, he walked the road with his head held high. Dignity and respect followed him like a cloak to the end. Vaya con Dios.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated in the name of Dr. Earl D. Jacobs to the California Institute of Technology Scholarship Foundation, MC 5-32, Pasadena, CA 91125. Or, you may “pay it forward.”
