“Nunsense,” the durable musical that has spawned either four or eight sequels, depending on your math, returns to Idyllwild as “Meshuggah-Nuns!” When Dan Goggin created the Little Sisters of Hoboken 20 years ago, he may not have anticipated the rapture with which audiences would receive the singing, dancing, convoluted plot twists and high jinks that consume the sisters and convulse the audiences. “Nunsense” has received more than 5,000 productions worldwide and been translated into 21 languages.

Now the sisters are on an ecumenical “Faith of All Nations” cruise, when the shipboard cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” gets seasick, but for the guy playing Tevye. The captain asks the sisters and Tevye to put on a show, with songs that include “Contrition” replacing “Tradition” and “If I Were a Catholic,” instead of “If I Were a Rich Man.”

So, Catholic, Jew, Protestant or infidel there is probably something for you here since the sisters can always be trusted to deliver something wacky, wistful and wonderful. You can expect a rich borscht of Catskills mixed with convent as the show business sisters (they’ve added “show business” to their vows) keep things rocking on the high seas.

“Meshuggah-Nuns,” an Idyllwild Master Chorale production, is directed and choreographed by Lisa Furugen and features a live band. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for students. For reservations, call (951) 659-4480.
