Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies, aided by state park rangers, rescued seven female hikers around 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, about one mile below the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway mountain station.

One of the seven had notified authorities by cell phone at 6:14 p.m. that a member of the group was experiencing medical problems and could not continue the hike.

The Sheriff’s Aviation Unit airlifted 46-year-old Kristine Masneri, of Anchorage, Ala., off the mountain and to the Desert Regional Medical Center where she received medical treatment. The balance of the hiking party continued their trek to the top.

The Sheriff’s Department reminds hikers that adequate hydration for a hike’s duration and mobile communication devices are essential elements for a safe and successful hiking experience.
