Around 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, an alert teacher on her lunch break at Idyllwild School heard a domestic argument in progress at a residence on Saunders Meadow Road, opposite a wing of school classrooms. She then spotted a man with a rifle getting into a truck and driving away from the residence. Despite rumors heard in town, no shots were fired and nothing further occurred.

As a precautionary measure, school principal Matt Kraemer ordered children to be moved from classrooms adjacent to Saunders Meadow Road to other empty classrooms. “I erred on the side of caution,” said Kraemer, who also notified all Idyllwild teachers and staff of what was in progress.

“Students were out of their classrooms for about an hour and a half,” said Kraemer, “until the responding [Riverside County Sheriff’s Department] deputy gave the all clear.”
