The Idyllwild Recreation District (IRD) has planned free transportation to a college fair for local high school students. On Saturday, Sept. 24, the College and Vocational Invitational will be held in Temecula. Over 150 colleges and trade schools are slated to attend.

Presented by the Temecula Community Services Department, the annual event gives college-bound students ages 14 through 18 and their parents the chance to meet, mingle with and ask questions of representatives from the attending schools.

Participating academic institutions include Cornell University, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, Princeton, Stanford, Rutgers, Ohio State, USC and the University of California and California State University systems. Military academies, both the Naval and Air Force, as well as the Merchant Marine Academy, will be represented. Representatives from the Army National Guard and Job Corps will also be in attendance.

Specialized and trade schools include the film schools, Columbia College in both Hollywood and Chicago, Firestorm Firefighter Training Camp, the Art Institute of California/San Diego, Gemological Institute of America, Health Staff Training Institute, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Milwaukee School of Engineering and representatives from various fire service academies.

Recreation Manager GeGe Beagle requests that interested students or their parents preregister at Town Hall prior to Thursday, Sept. 22, so that the appropriate number of vehicles and drivers can be arranged. Parents will have to sign release forms prior to students’ departure for the fair. If there are more than 40 interested students and parents, the district will charter a bus similar to those used for the recent off-Hill Summer Camp field trips. Transportation will leave from Town Hall at 8 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees should bring money for lunch. The event is held in a mall with a large food court.

The fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Promenade Temecula, 40820 Winchester Road in Temecula.
