Idyllwild Arts Academy (IAA) welcomes Lori Stinson, soprano, Nelms McKelvain, piano and Shen Liu, clarinet for an evening of chamber music on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Stephens Recital Hall on the IAA campus.

They will perform “12 Poems by Emily Dickinson” by Aaron Copland along with works by Franz Schubert and Gabriel Fauré.

Stinson is a frequent concert and opera soloist in the greater Los Angeles area and around the country. She has sung operatic roles with the San Diego Opera, Opera Pacific, Glimmerglass Opera, Aspen Opera Theater, Utah Festival Opera, Pacific Repertory Opera, Long Beach Opera, as well as covering roles at New York City Opera.

McKelvain began his advanced musical studies with Elizabeth Lasley at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 1968. In 1972, he returned to his native Texas to study with artist-teacher John Perry at the University of Texas at Austin.

McKelvain joined the IAA music faculty in September 1989 and became music department chair in 1990. He became dean of the arts in 1992 and served in that capacity for 16 years. He returned to full-time teaching in fall 2007. In addition, he is an associate college counselor and assists IAA music seniors in their college and conservatory applications.

Shen is currently an IAA senior and is quickly becoming a recognized talent across the country. Before moving to the States, Shen was awarded first prize in numerous solo competitions all across China. Shen decided to attend IAA to study with internationally renowned clarinet instructor Yehuda Gilad.

This recital performance is free and open to the public.
