Doug Selby

Doug Selby passed away on July 29, 2012, at his home in Mountain Center surrounded by his wife and daughters after a brief bout with cancer.

 

Doug was a native Southern Californian. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he raised his family in both Temecula and Idyllwild.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was trained as a diesel mechanic. After finishing his Navy tour, he attended USC, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor of arts in International Relations.

Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and attended flight school, becoming an A4 Skyhawk pilot. His Marine Corps career included a combat tour at Chu Lai, Vietnam, in 1965 with VMA 211, the Wake Island Avengers. In 1966, he joined Continental Airlines as a pilot where he remained until 1983. In 1982 he moved with his wife and girls to Idyllwild. He finished his flying career with UPS, remaining with them until retiring in 2006. For the last 30 years, Doug enjoyed building and maintaining his mountaintop retreat in Mountain Center.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joanne; his two daughters, Denise and Jeannine; and grandson, Samuel Douglas Rubidoux. He was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery on Aug. 9, 2012. Condolences may be sent to the family at: P.O. Box 3, Mountain Center, CA 92561.
