Raul Ruiz, Democratic challenger, slightly widen his lead over Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack after the Riverside County Registrar’s office released more results Thursday evening, Nov. 8.

Ruiz now has a lead of 4,679 votes with more than 166,000 ballots counted. He has 51.4 percent of the vote compared to Bono Mack’s 48.6 percent.

However, the Registrar’s office still has nearly 164,000 ballots to count. More than half of there are vote-by-mail ballots. The others are provisional ballots (60,000) and damaged ballots (18,000), which have to be duplicated before being counted.

Additional results are expected this evening, Friday, Nov. 9; but there has been not indication how many of the uncounted ballots are from this district. Thursday’s results added 3,912 votes to the total for this race.

Ruiz’s campaign manager, Klyle Layman, issued the following statement after Thursday’s totals were released, “We are confident that when the remaining vote-by-mail and provisional ballots are counted we will maintain our lead and win this election. Tonight, almost 4,000 additional ballots were counted, and our lead expanded by 122 votes.”

In all the other races in which Idyllwiid residents voted, there were no changes. For example, in the Hemet Unified School District election, Lisa DeForest expanded her lead as the top vote getter and Jim Smith and Marilyn Forst remained second and third for the three seats in this election.

Another 1,300 ballots were added to the Measure U totals, and there are now 22,151 “Yes” votes, which is 68.2 percent of the total, a slight expansion of the previous lead of 68 percent.
