On Saturday, Oct. 19, at 9:22 a.m., Mountain Disaster Preparedness will host the fourth-annual Idyllwild Shake-out, a major earthquake simulation drill. Idyllwild Fire Protection District, Cal Fire and the Riverside County Office of Emergency Services are co-sponsoring the event.
Certified Emergency Response Teams, Mile High Radio Club and Woodies will mobilize to go through real-case scenarios at Disaster Aid Stations A (Pine Cove) and H (Idyllwild). Observers are welcome. “This will give our community an opportunity to observe how the MDP functions in an emergency,” said Mike Feyder, MDP president.
CERT teams go will go out and identify issues that have been distributed at various locations throughout the community. During the hour-and-a-half-long drill, the MDP radio network is activated, communication devices within the DAS units are activated, and the teams will practice real search and rescue drills. Local theater group Isis serves as victims of the various disasters. Triage units will be active at each of the DAS units. IFPD and Cal Fire both participate in this hands-on exercise.
MDP also encourages participation in the Great California Shakeout at 10:17 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. More than 8.3 million registrants participate in the “drop, cover and hold on” drills throughout California. For more information or to register, www.shakeout.org.
