Leg Up Theatre Company performs the romantic comedy, “It Had to Be You,” at the Idyllwild School Gym at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 to Monday, Feb. 17. The play, written by Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor, follows the antics of an aspiring actress who “sort-of” kidnaps the producer from an audition she attends.
“She’s not the typical girl; the whole thing just escalates and it becomes really sweet at the end,” Christina Nordella, a founder of Leg Up Theater Company and an actor in the production, explains. “I play the wacky, zany lady; what else would I play [laughs]. She’s over the top.”
Preston Sparks, also a local television and film actor, plays the male lead. “He has done film and TV so he holds his own. It’s a joy to work with him,” Nordella said.
Proceeds from the production will benefit Idyllwild Middle School, Idyllwild Community Center, and Leg Up Theatre Company. “This is our first big play and we are really proud that we are one of the first organizations to raise money for ICC since their big presentation. Conor [O’Farrell] and I really want to see that happen and we want to support them every year, possibly with a play,” said Nordella.
“We are also raising money for Idyllwild Middle School sports because I knew that Matt [Kraemer, Idyllwild School principal] could use some extra money. I said let’s do it at the school and then we’ll raise money for both. We’re also raising money for Leg Up to pay for the production,” said Nordella. “We’re really excited to do it because it fulfills our mission statement to ‘fun’-raise and raise money for charities. That’s what Leg Up does; we raise money for charities in a really fun way.”
Idyllwild’s own O’Farrell, who has appeared as an actor in numerous television shows, movies and theater productions, directs the play. Nordella said, “He’s an incredible director. I appreciate his expertise; it wouldn’t be the same play without him.”
The Swiss Fondue House, located at 54700 N. Circle Dr., is offering 15 percent off for ticket holders the night of the performance. Town Hall is hosting “Parents Night Out Pajama Party” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 for children ages 3 through 14. A dinner of pizza, pasta and salad will be served. Space is limited. For more information, call (951) 659-2635.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Idyllwild Town Crier and Visitors Center or at the door.
“It’s date night and [the play] is super light; and at the end of the day you’re helping kids, you’re helping the ICC and you’re helping the whole community really, and you’ll have lots of fun doing it,” Nordella added.
