Riverside County Executive Officer Jay Orr has appointed Assistant Registrar of Voters Rebecca A. Spencer as the interim registrar of voters following Kari Verjil’s retirement last week.

Spencer has worked in the Riverside County Registrar’s office for more than 14 years. The assignment takes effect Friday. She joined the Registrar’s office in 1999 as a student intern.

From 2005 to 2010, she served as chief deputy registrar. Her duties focused on candidate services, voter services and absentee voting. She served as interim registrar from November 2010 through February 2011 while a permanent registrar was recruited. She has been assistant registrar since April 2011.

As assistant registrar, Spencer has been responsible for hiring staff and overseeing five divisions with 32 full-time employees and 300 temporary employees in the run-up to major elections. She will coordinate election activities in the Registrar’s office as the statewide primary election in June approaches.

Spencer earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of California, Riverside, in 2004. She received a master’s degree in business administration from UCR in 2008. She is a member of the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials and the Certified Election and Registration Association.
