Jim Crandall, Palms to Pines Golf Association handicap chair, reports about the Friday, April 18, golf tournament at the Diamond Valley Golf Club in Hemet.

It was a cloudy morning with mild temperatures and the course was in excellent shape. This month the group played a four-man scramble tournament. In a scramble, each foursome is a team.

Each person in the foursome hits a tee shot, then the group picks the best ball, and they all play their second shot from that spot. Each foursome continues to play its next shot from the best lie until the ball is in the hole. This fosters teamwork and camaraderie — a different spin to a golf competition.

The one caveat is that each group has to use at least four drives from each player. And because they have four chances to make each shot, scores tend to be lower than in regular competitions. Also, course handicaps tend to be much lower.

The winning team (with a course handicap of 1) was Crandall, Jerry Daquila, Robert Priefer and Dan Slattery, with 7 birdies and no bogies for a 65, net 64 to win the tourney by 3 strokes.

Second-place team (handicap 1) was Chuck Alkire, Pete Capparelli, Don DePalma and Ray Rickards who shot a 68, net 67.

Third-place team (handicap 3) went to David Hiemenz, John McAndrews, Bill Ragland and Barry Wallace, who shot a 71, net 68.

The closest-to-the-pin winners on the four par 3s were DePalma on hole four, Ragland on hole six, Alkire on hole 13 and Crandall on hole 17.
