The iconic Grey Squirrel clothing store is gone. The building is empty. The “For rent” sign also is gone.

Plans to construct a two-story self-storage facility at Fern Valley Corner may face obstacles both from neighboring businesses and residents, as well as from the county. Riverside County Transportation and Land Management Agency Program Administrator Wendell Bugtai said no applications for permits have yet been received. But Olivia Barnes, legislative assistant to 3rd District Supervisor Chuck Washington, said that even if a project application were filed, it might be difficult for applicants to receive a “Will Serve” letter from the water district. She noted that the proposed facility would require a Conditional Use Permit because of zoning, and that might also be difficult to obtain.

Also, construction is well underway on Shane Stewart’s new gas station in Mountain Center. Crews are in the process of excavating where gasoline storage tanks will be placed in front of the building facing Highway 74.
