To preview its two-day “Idyllwild is A Magical Place” celebration, planned for Father’s Day weekend, the Idyllwild Chamber of Commerce offered hot-air balloon rides from the center of town.

Fern Valley residents Dot Lewis and Win Wood hosted a gathering of about 50 women who had served as Women Airforce Service Pilots during WW II. The two were authors of “We Were WASPs,” published in 1945.

Final preparations were being made for the seventh-annual Timber Festival, a two-day event. Among the contestants were Dora Dillman and Bob Baker, winners of the previous year’s overall men’s and women’s competitions.

Among the 66 Idyllwild Arts graduates were 12 Idyllwild residents, including Salutatorian Molly Greenwood and Valedictorian Matt Gray. It was the first time in the Academy’s 15-year history that local residents captured both top honors.

The Idyllwild 5K and 10K Run/Walk produced a strong showing for local runners. Idyllwild residents took first place in the Women’s 10K and the Men’s and Women’s 5K runs.

At Friday’s Hemet High School (HHS) 2011 graduation, Idyllwild resident Logan Schelly was to make the valedictorian speech.

Ambulance and emergency medical service rates were to increase in the Idyllwild Fire Protection District beginning July 1. IFPD commissioners unanimously approved a nearly 25-percent increase in the cost of an ambulance transport. Also, the per-mile cost would increase 18 percent.
