Hearings and settlement conferences for Robert Pape, 28, and Cristin Smith, 27, continue to be re-scheduled. Pape’s latest court appearance was Aug. 5 when a new felony settlement conference was set for Aug. 26 and a possible preliminary hearing on Sept. 7.

Pape has had several attorneys replaced and issues of conflict declared. The public defenders’ office declared a conflict after its appointment as his attorney. Subsequently, another panel was in conflict and now a third group is defending Pape. He is still in county jail as the pre-trial sessions continue.

Both men have been arrested for the 2006 triple murder of Jon Hayward, Vicki Friedli and Vicki’s daughter Becky Friedli in Pinyon Pines. They had been arrested for the triple murder in March 2014, but nearly seven months later, the office of the former district attorney dismissed all the charges against Pape and Smith.
