Hikers on the Round Valley Hiking Trail discovered an unresponsive 46-year-old man in full cardiac arrest around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Hikers notified rangers at the mountaintop Tram Station.

According to Mark Hudgens, state park superintendent, rangers went to the scene with an automated external defibrillator. Hikers who had found the man had been administering CPR, but to no effect. Similarly, according to Hudgens, rangers could not revive the man using the AED. The subject was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m.

The man was identified as Jose Antonio Macias, 46, of Los Angeles. The elevation at which Macias was discovered is 8,816 feet. “He had been hiking. We don’t know whether it was a day hike or he had been camping,” said Hudgens. “The death is currently under investigation.”
