New owner Jay McCormack keeps Selden Belden sign

As Jay McCormack and family continue their ambitious revamp of Idyllwild’s historic Village Market, McCormack is installing a new sign on the front of the market. “We want the community to know it’s a new business with a new look,” said McCormack, who previously helmed nine off-Hill Rio Ranch Markets.

But in a nod to Idyllwild’s history and its historic district, McCormack will retain the Selden Belden-designed sign that has long anchored Village Market through many ownership changes.

“We are formally reaching out to the [Idyllwild Area] Historical Society to let them know we intend to relocate the sign to the south side of the building so it will be visible to all customers parking at the market,” said McCormack. “That way, its historical value and position will be retained.”

McCormack and family are eager to offer a new up-scale grocery-shopping alternative to Idyllwild locals but also are dedicated to maintaining mountain-friendliness and shopping ease. In deciding to keep the Belden sign at the market, McCormack preserves a bit of history at the site for which the sign was designed.
