The many visitors to Idyllwild over Memorial Day weekend will be able to enjoy the art in action that is Plein Air, the act of painting outdoors. Dotted throughout town beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday will be Art Alliance of Idyllwild Plein Air artists competing for a first-, second- or third-place ribbon with cash prizes of $300, $200 or $100, respectively.

The award-winning pieces will be on display at the Courtyard Gallery (54240 Ridgeview Drive) at an Artists Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. These and other Plein Air art will be for sale at the gallery.

Shuttles will be available during the day to take visitors to watch the artists create magic with their brushes, as well as stop at other places around town, including the outdoor art fair, Art in the Park, and many of the fine-art galleries throughout town.

Rob Padilla will lead a sketchbook walking tour starting at 10 a.m. from the Courtyard Gallery. Join this free tour and sketch some of Padilla’s favorite sites.

People may learn how to paint an outdoor scene of beautiful Idyllwild from award-winning artist Jessica Schiffman. She will conduct this artist workshop from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $30 per person. Artists should bring their own materials.

Visitors may enjoy Idyllwild in the fresh air while sipping a craft beer or glass of wine at a Beer and Wine Garden from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Courtyard Gallery. Listen to live music provided by Stone’s Throw and take a moment to learn more about the AAI and its mission to support arts education and bring art lovers to Idyllwild.
