This afternoon I spent about two hours moseying around lower Strawberry Creek, upstream from the bridge crossing on Highway 74. I did not go far, nor did I intend to. The route up the creek from the highway is no less daunting than the route down from the grotto.
Share/Bookmark As of Nov. 29, the web page http://tchester.org/sj/flora/idyllwild_park.html for the [Tom] Chester and [Dave] Stith et al flora of the county park has been updated with more photos and maps. Chester added some really cool new features. Now you can click on the scientific name for a complete botanical description of each species including [...]
Share/BookmarkOn Tuesday, Nov. 20, Tom Chester and I made a long overdue return to the Idyllwild County Park in order to survey and document the vegetation along Idyllwild Creek, which is on the east and south edge of the meadow and the opposite side from Lilly Creek. In 2010, we studied and documented the park [...]
Share/BookmarkThis botanical season has unintentionally become one of personal firsts for both Tom [Chester] and me. Three out of the last four hikes have been to areas on the mountain that we had never been to before. It began when we learned that there was a route to Deer Springs. This information kindled a [...]
Share/BookmarkAs I have matured (read gotten older), often the journey has become more important than the destination. The exception to that rule came on our last hike. Deer Springs originates just below the summit of Marion Mountain at an elevation of right around 10,000 feet. As one of the headwaters of the North Fork [...]

Share/Bookmark[Several days ago] Tom and I visited my favorite lemon lily. I am happy to report it is still standing tall and strong, and has produced an abundance of seeds. I have known this lily since 2007 and have recently begun to study it. I wish I could single out more individual lilies to study, [...]
Share/BookmarkLast week, Tom [Chester] and I went on yet another hunt for the rare Cliff cinquefoil (Potentilla rimicola), this time at a site that produced three reports from a host of people on the same day in 1924. I can only imagine that there must have been a party of botanists on a field trip [...]
Share/BookmarkWhile fire appears to be devastating to the plants in the forest, for some it is beneficial if not essential. These are often called fire followers and require some aspect of a fire to thrive. The mechanisms are many. Some trees require heat to release their seeds. Fire may burn away inhibitory chemicals in the [...]
