Plans for a line from the Idyllwild Substation had been started prior to the war but were curtailed because of shortages. 60 years ago – 1952 […]

Sitting by the Fire: Goodbye

Well, I have goods news and more good news. First, the new IFPD Fire Chief is in place and he hit the ground running on Aug. 1. Second, my work here is done and I will be leaving soon. I will stay for a few days of transition. My last day in the office at IFPD will be Thursday, but I will return for a few hours to help with the Aug. 14 commission meeting. After Aug. 14, Betty and I will enjoy some real retirement for at least a while.

Four paws up to our furry canines and felines for wagging and purring your way right into forever homes. Daisy, the min-pin mix is now known as Miss Moneypenny and has the unconditional love of her humans. Lil Stevie, our partially blind rescue from Anza has found her way into her foster’s heart to make […]

Idyllwild Botany: Deer Springs or bust …

As I have matured (read gotten older), often the journey has become more important than the destination. The exception to that rule came on our last hike. Deer Springs originates just below the summit of Marion Mountain at an elevation of right around 10,000 feet.   As one of the headwaters of the North Fork […]

Outside Idyllwild: Photographing birds; it’s harder than I thought …

We live in a place that is filled with bird life. You can’t go outside your door without seeing all manner of avian species. They are in the air, in the trees and on the ground; yet unless you are lucky or have the right equipment it is not easy getting a good photograph of […]

Fire and Forest: ‘Citizen of the Year’ and other lessons from the Woodies …

The Woodies are the rock stars of California fire safe councils.   As the volunteer arm of the Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council, they abate homes and cut and split firewood for those in need. People driving past the HELP Center on a Friday morning have probably noticed a very busy group of people in […]

Before Our Time: Two early and longtime Idyllwild fore-fathers …

Frank Strong and George Dickinson get relatively little attention as pioneer developers in Strawberry Valley. Unlike George Hannahs, Walter Lindley or Claudius Lee Emerson, they were based in Los Angeles, and neither one resided here or took an active part in day-to-day management of their holdings on the Hill. Still, their influence was substantial. It […]

65 years ago – 1947 A new telephone service was inaugurated, offering six trunk lines to Hemet.   60 years ago – 1952 Paul and Mary Gormley were manning the lookout post at Ranger Peak. During the rest of the year, the Gormleys worked as cook and butler for a family in the San Francisco […]

Hurray for Buddy who went for a long hike and finally returned home to his worried humans. Paws up to Jake, the Anatolian shepherd found just wandering in Idyllwild. He is now in a trial home. And it was love at first sight for Betty Boop, the chug, and her loving human. Miracles never cease […]

Idyllwild Botany: Travails of a lemon lily …

It is a very bad year for lemon lilies in the San Jacinto Mountains, or at least the portion of Tahquitz Valley that we surveyed on July 16. On June 16, we did a walk which started my concern about this area.   We have seen dozens of lilies blooming in the bracken field in […]
