Tax Tips: Social security benefit taxation

The taxation of Social Security benefits depends on several complex calculations. The first step is to calculate your provisional income, which is your gross income plus tax-exempt interest plus one-half of your social security benefit. You then need to look up your base amount: $25,000 for a single, head-of-household, or married filing separate, (living apart […]

Lola’s Kitchen: St. Paddy’s food …

Saint Patrick’s Day is a fun celebration. When my husband and I lived in the Bay Area, south of San Francisco, we would frequent an Irish pub. The name eludes me but believe it started with Mc. They served green beer with appetizers. The place would be packed. Upon moving to Idyllwild my special celebration […]

Outside Idyllwild: Old dog, new tricks …

I have been planning a trip to New England for the last several months and plan to go sometime in June. I have several reasons for going back east but hiking some of the famous peaks is high on the list. I have no plans to do the Appalachian Trail as a thru hike, or […]

Pay attention in class and what do you get? Adopted! Just ask Buster Brown, our adorable boxer-mix puppy. Clicker training was easy. Add to that a few wags and puppy kisses and off he went to his forever loving home. Tears of joy, Buster! Paws up to Herk, the golden Lab for showing us how […]

Outside Idyllwild: Time to work out the kinks …

My plan for springtime was to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mexican border to Idyllwild. This is a 180-mile section of the PCT and it will take money, planning and good physical shape to pull it off. I plan to do it in 10 days, if I can get my act together. Even […]

Before Our Time: Fore! BeFore! …

Brendan Steele’s recent success has made golf newsworthy in Idyllwild once again. News media around the country love to highlight the odd fact that he grew up in a town without a golf course. But Idyllwild has not always been a golf-free zone. There’s a reason for street names like Fairway Drive and Green Avenue […]

Fire and Forest: Fire safe lessons from 2011 …

We have gotten a bit of winter recently, but we should not forget that this has been a relatively dry season, and that will have consequences. Without much moisture in plants, we can expect an early start of fire season. The Forest Service and CAL FIRE have already arranged their staffing to cope with drier […]

Polly, our polydactyl has finally found her forever home. All six toes up to you Polly. And Boo, the Chiweenie didn’t take long to wiggle his way into the heart and arms of his new human.

It’s puppy love! Wrap your heart around this bundle of fur that was rescued from the streets of Idyllwild. Buster Brown is a 16-week-young boxer/pit mix. Along with puppy kisses upon request, this smart boy is already in clicker training class. His first report card is A+, as the basic commands were a piece of cake for him. He is learning leash rules, and is great with all other four-leggeds, cats and dogs.
