Opinion: Motley IFPD issues

Life goes on and nothing changes. Two, three, four, or perhaps five grand juries will do the trick. Property tax funded radios, and heart monitor links never purchased. Really? No problem, Stone just doubled the Pine Cove and mountain property tax funded contract, maybe that will buy the monitors, hmmm. The Pine Cove parcel tax […]

Outside Idyllwild: Close encounters of the furry kind …

This is the year for small mammals, including chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels and gophers. I don’t remember ever seeing so many baby rabbits and chipmunks in the past. I seem to be seeing them every time I walk out my door.   In contrast, I have seldom seen or heard coyotes this season. Where are […]

Lola’s Kitchen: Ice cream and other frozen desserts …

I love ice cream; it’s my favorite dessert. Ice cream brings back great memories of my childhood. As a little girl every Saturday afternoon, my parents would load my younger sister and I up in the old pickup truck and make a dusty trip to the grocery store. Across the street was a creamery, which […]

Off the Main Roads: Beat the heat …

When I started backpacking over two decades ago, I was convinced that packing fresh food was “verboten.” The colossal weight of several extra ounces of avocado on your back were just not worth the delight of savoring it’s creamy green goodness. The hiking gods would never allow such a sin to go unpunished. If you […]

Past Tense: Aug. 9, 2012

65 years ago – 1947 Fern Valley Garage advertised “Expert Repair Service, Greeting Cards, Gift Wrappings.”   • • • Electric power was on its way to Pine Cove. Plans for a line from the Idyllwild Substation had been started prior to the war but were curtailed because of shortages. 60 years ago – 1952 […]

Sitting by the Fire: Goodbye

Well, I have goods news and more good news. First, the new IFPD Fire Chief is in place and he hit the ground running on Aug. 1. Second, my work here is done and I will be leaving soon. I will stay for a few days of transition. My last day in the office at IFPD will be Thursday, but I will return for a few hours to help with the Aug. 14 commission meeting. After Aug. 14, Betty and I will enjoy some real retirement for at least a while.

Opinion: Fire fee appropriate cost for here

Regarding “Coming soon to mailboxes in rural Riverside County: A new fire tax!” [in the Aug. 2 issue of the Town Crier]. Unless I’m missing something, the concept of a surcharge for fire protection in the WUI (wildland urban interface) seems more than reasonable. I realize that fire protection in Pine Cove (and Idyllwild) costs […]

Opinion: Concerts in the park

I had the pleasure of attending the concert with the Coachella Valley Symphony on July 26 at the Idyllwild Community Center venue. After reading the letters [in the Aug. 2 issue of the Town Crier] commenting on the noise the children made while playing in the Children’s Playground during the concert, I feel it necessary […]

Four paws up to our furry canines and felines for wagging and purring your way right into forever homes. Daisy, the min-pin mix is now known as Miss Moneypenny and has the unconditional love of her humans. Lil Stevie, our partially blind rescue from Anza has found her way into her foster’s heart to make […]

Another Point of View: A new fire tax!

If you live in the unincorporated communities in the hills above Temecula, Murrieta, and Lake Elsinore, or other Riverside County areas, such as the San Jacinto Mountains, you are located in an area designated by the state as a “State Responsibility Area” for fire protection purposes. As a result, you are likely to receive a […]
