With great anticipation, I wended my way out to West Marion View again for what has become a worthy and most enjoyable fundraiser for local folks who could do with a spot of assistance. I refer to Sandii Castleberry’s Castle Berry Country Club, that beguiling golf Mecca that beckons you forth then cuts you off […]
Brendan Steele shot a nine-under-par 69-67-67-72 — 275 in the Deutsche Bank Championship just outside of Boston last week. He tied for 10th place in the tournament, earning a paycheck of more than $177,000. During the week, the native Idyllwilder posted three eagles and 13 birdies against 10 bogeys, entirely avoiding double bogeys that have […]
Steele’s one-under-par 70-71 — 141 in The Barclay’s last week was not good enough to make the cut in the first tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs, so he earned no new FedEx cup points. However, he had enough FedEx Cup points built up from regular season play to advance to the second tournament of […]
Beyond the end of August, the future of the Idyllwild Skate Park is uncertain, but it will be open each weekend this month, thanks to a donation from Idyllwild Pines Camp (IPC). While Idyllwild Community Recreation Council Acting Chair (ICRC) Dawn Sonnier was hoping to get financial support from Riverside County to keep the park open, that door seems closed for now.
Idyllwild’s Palms to Pines Golf Association held its regular monthly tournament in conjunction with the first round of match play playoffs for the club championship on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. The day was sunny and warm and the course was in good shape with fast greens. In the […]
Playing in his first major golf championship, Brendan Steele tied for 19th place, earning more than $81,000 in prize money at the PGA Championship in Atlanta last week, bringing his total winnings to nearly $1.6 million. The native Idyllwilder gave his hometown a huge thrill when he finished Saturday’s play in a two-way tie for […]

Coming from a tie for seventh after Friday’s second […]
Brendan Steele earned $49,300 in prize money last week. His three-over-par 69-74-74-66 — 283 tied him with Phil Michelson and three others for 48th place in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio. Prior to the tournament, the native Idyllwilder played a practice round with Michelson during which the older pro graciously imparted much […]
Shane Fender, Town Crier Advertising sales representative, took first place at the annual American Legion Post 800 Horseshoe Tournament for the second year in a row. Fender took first-place honors with randomly chosen partner Chad Marler. According to tournament rules, all partners are chosen randomly. Thirty-two players competed.
Brendan Steele did not fare well in the RBC Canadian Open in Vancouver, British Columbia two weeks ago. His 76-72 — 148 did not qualify him for the cut and weekend play. His driving accuracy was low, which led to a low percentage of greens in regulation. The Idyllwild native had last week off, but […]
