Would that any of us could find such a drive within our lives, such energy, such zeal! With every single article posted, the content is immeasurably increased by this crusading citizen’s commentary.

However I am disappointed that this Murrow-to-be has limited their activities to the commentary pages of this august publication! I detect a dedication to the cause that rises above, beyond, and outside of the sadly impassable limits presented by the Hill’s paper of record’s commentary section. This commitment to seeing the truth out must broaden its horizons, lest it be snuffed out by a lack of response from a public that cannot properly perceive the path to providence!

I would advise the person or persons behind JTF to first, obtain a website on which the full details of the investigation can be listed, and second, to invest in some shoe leather and get into the investigation. The absolute best person to answer your questions, dear JTF, is you. It would be a life’s crowning moment to scoop not just the Crier, but the LA Times and the Press-Enterprise. Corruption investigations such as this are what earns Pulitzers for the diligent! I say to you, JTF, the answers are out there – go and find them!

Comment on Cell tower permit followed county procedures by SoulSecretService https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/05/07/cell-tower-permit-followed-county-procedures/#comment-139437 Mon, 18 Nov 2019 02:21:28 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=60655#comment-139437 Thanks for posting this article.
Sad to hear that Idyllwild has a 5g tower. Very sad. Definitely changes the vibe up there. Probably will effect businesses there as more visitors realize what has occurred. Everyone that lives in Idyllwild should have had a say as to IF that technology would be allowed there.

Comment on Readers Write: Idyllwild Fire did it again by Yan Cat https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/11/07/readers-write-idyllwild-fire-did-it-again/#comment-139431 Fri, 08 Nov 2019 08:54:33 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=62636#comment-139431 Next year I propose we have a special area that does not allow any of what you pointed out is dangerous. It will be miles from the parade so that those concerned are not unduly put at risk of hearing festivities they may disagree with. Problem solved.

Comment on Highway 74 open 24/7 with pilot cars by Jimdover https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/09/04/highway-74-open-24-7-with-pilot-cars/#comment-139418 Mon, 23 Sep 2019 02:24:44 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=61946#comment-139418 The pilot car route is frustratingly inefficient. The road is closed for 9.5 miles. The lower 3 miles have seen no construction in months and do not need to be closed or piloted. The upper 2.5 miles also have seen no construction in months and do not need to be closed or piloted. That leaves 4 miles in the middle that are still legitimately in need of attention. How much more efficient would the pilot car be if those of us who are required to follow the sluggish pilot car only had to do so for 4 miles. That leaves 4 miles in the middle that are still legitimately in need of attention. How much more efficient would the pilot car be if those of us who are required to follow the sluggish pilot car only had to do so for 4 miles? Has no one thought of this or noticed this? To me it is completely ridiculous and a colossal waste of resources and time. I’ve seen construction closures throughout the state and none are this bad, poorly run and in efficient.

I would like to see the schedule for 74 coming up from Hemet.
When can we expect to see a follow-up?

Thanks!

Comment on Power outages possible in desert by mondoredondo https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/06/20/power-outages-possible-in-desert/#comment-139403 Fri, 21 Jun 2019 08:54:00 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=61190#comment-139403 Have they started cleaning brush from powerline routes? Shutting off power only removes ignition and doesn’t remove fuel. And cutback trees along evac routes. Going cheap and not doing wildfire mitigation brush clearing helped get SCE into it’s current mess. Will they still fail to do basic maintenance?

Comment on Community meeting on highway closures on Thursday, June 13 by billy https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/06/04/community-meeting-on-highway-closures/#comment-139399 Thu, 13 Jun 2019 06:09:24 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=60957#comment-139399 I drive up and back Hwy 74 once a week to Hemet. Don’t see much progress or equipment lately. Worked 50 years in construction contracting. Project looks mismanaged. Is it incompetence or corruption or both? Washington and Caltrans were duped and sucker punched by Ames. Should have more than one contractor for Hwy 74 & 243. Skanska and Granite could do it. Where is contract penalty clause enforcement for not completing on time? If fire breaks out near Mt Center and heads to Idy, we are all trapped and fried! Hotter than hell yesterday and today. Fire weather! Where is Ruiz, Feinstein, and Kamala Harris. We need someone pounding the table. Billions of $ being wasted on the high speed rail to nowhere but what about our mountain roads? IS ANYBODY LISTENING?

Comment on Supervisor Washington instrumental in Highway 74 opening by Jon Brown https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/2019/03/26/supervisor-washington-instrumental-in-highway-74-opening/#comment-139365 Fri, 05 Apr 2019 17:16:45 +0000 https://idyllwildtowncrier.com/?p=60227#comment-139365 TY for the more detailed explanation. Does sound rough and I always admire people that choose to live up here while driving off the hill for work.

As a licensed civil engineering in the state of California (I don’t work for or with CalTrans), I spoke with their lead GeoTec (Richard) at length after the meeting and I don’t see anything unusual or “slow go” with their reconstruction plan.

As a practical matter there simply isn’t enough room to build bypasses where they can work while public traffic flows by. They could barely manage it after the fires when the construction zone was just a few hundred feet. I can’t speak to thier funding, but while I guess they could work 24 hour shifts, a lot of that slope work isn’t safe or practical to do at night in those close quarters. It’s scary enough for dozer drivers to be benching tall unstable slopes by daylight.

As a matter of timeline, rebuilding slopes take a LOT of time because there are really physical limits to re-compacting soil to be stable enough not to fail again. You can’t just throw 200 feet of dirt down and hope it stays put. You put down one foot of dirt, and then run equipment over, then add another foot… and repeat. Things will still settle, which takes time. I’ll You also over excavate back into the existing ground to put in geogrid. I’ll leave out managing moisture levels in the dirt for optimal compaction. Regardless, rebuilding big slopes takes a lot of time.

When I saw the failure on 243 my first though was “that’s a 2 month repair”. 74 I didn’t think was going to be as bad, but the subsequent photos of the actual slope failures, is certainly a 2+ month job.

Wow. How did you calculate an increase of $700/m for your commute?
