Frederick Paul Young, 80, of Idyllwild, died at his home Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, following complications from cancer.
Paul was born in Butte, Mont., to Frederick Young and Laura Ackerman Young on June 2, 1927.
He spent his childhood years in the small, gold-mining town of Sumpter in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon where his great-grandfather served as the first postmaster. He treasured those years, and throughout his life kept in contact with many childhood friends.
Paul attended high school in Baker City, Ore., and enlisted in the Navy in 1945, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He worked for American Standard in Torrance for 34 years before retiring in Idyllwild in 1985 with his beloved wife, Marion.
He was an active member of his community, always willing to help others, and is mourned by his many friends. He was devoted to his family and received great satisfaction from his time spent with them.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Silver Pine Lodge in Idyllwild.
Along with his wife, survivors include daughter Sandra Germain of Riverside; son Chris Young and wife Susan of Moreno Valley; stepson Jerry Jones and wife Kim of San Diego; stepdaughter Jennifer Chadwick and husband Ewing of Williams, Ariz.; brother Gordon Young, sister Louise Van Schoonhoven and her husband John, all of Cove, Ore.; brother-in-law Charles Gildersleeve of Spokane, Wash.; four grandchildren; a step-grandson; two great-grandchildren; and five nieces. His father, mother and sister, Kay Gildersleeve, preceded him in death.
