12 eagles spotted in SoCal

Fire budget cuts not received with acclaim

In order to find nearly $12 million of saving, Hawkins presented several steps, including imposing a fee for emergency medical services, closing Station 63 in Poppet Flats, and employing more two-person medic squads in place of three-person engines in rural and outlying areas (such as Garner Valley). The immediate response from the supervisors was neither enthusiastic nor complacent toward accepting Hawkins’ proposals. County Executive Jay Orr introduced the presentation and explained its intent. “We see clouds on the horizon and increased communication with the board is needed to have their direction.”

Gutierrez hopes to suppress evidence

The attorney for Frank Gutierrez of Idyllwild, who was arrested in July 2015, has requested a hearing to suppress certain evidence. At the March 10 trial readiness conference, Melissa McConaghay, a deputy public defender, submitted the motion. Judge Bambi Moyer agreed to schedule a hearing on it for Friday, March 17.

ARF fundraiser a big success

Maximus was the most popular dog, Wolfie led the cat contingent and Turbo, an Australian rat, was a landslide winner in the “other” animal category. The contest raised almost $6,400 for ARF. Some of that money will be used for pet owners who cannot afford health care for their animals. ARF had received a grant for this purpose and nearly half the funds have been used, according to Janice Murasko, ARF director.
