I have to laugh every time a major disaster strikes. Somehow the media always manages to find someone who declares that they never thought it could happen where they live or that it would ever happen to them. Why? Did they not realize that they live in a fault zone prone to earthquakes? Or an area prone to fires, or tornadoes or floods? The list can go on and on.

This year’s theme is “Have 2 Ways Out.” This is to emphasize that you need to have two ways to get out of a fire, particularly a house fire — but it is of no use if you do not practice. You should also know your ways out at your workplace or any place that you might visit, such as a hotel, the mall, etc.

Did you feel it? Maybe you heard it? There was a 4.7 earthquake that shook the Hill around 10 a.m. Monday morning. What you may not know is that there was a smaller one at 2.7 about 20 minutes earlier; a 3.0 in the La Quinta area about the same time, and during the next three hours four more “aftershocks” that varied between 2.5 and 2.8 occurred.
