Ken Dahleen, founder and impresario of the Idyllwild Summer Concert Series, has done it again \u2014 created a summer lineup with something for everyone.<\/p>\n
For 16 years, Dahleen and his board have provided a Thursday-night summer series of music under the stars \u2014 free. He contracts the acts and begins each summer with insufficient money to fund the series. He does it on faith and the community responds with sponsorships, donations and enthusiastic attendance.<\/p>\n
This year, two exciting additions are designed to bring out the crowds and justify the faith of the ISCS board. Dahleen had waited to announce the season until he could accomplish a major goal \u2014 contracting United States Marine band musicians for a return. It has been four years (2012) since a corps ensemble has played for ISCS. The men and women in their blue-dress uniforms are scheduled to play Thursday, July 28. Downbeat is at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
The series\u2019 musical flavor shifts to down-home Southern rock on July 14 when a Creedence Clearwater tribute band sends out some of the iconic group\u2019s biggest hits including \u201cProud Mary,\u201d \u201cBad Moon Rising,\u201d \u201cDown on the Corner\u201d and \u201cTravelin\u2019 Band.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although CCR was founded in San Francisco, the band parlayed Southern rock and South-centric lyrics to national fame \u2014 lyrics about bayous, catfish and the Mississippi River. It also penned and recorded songs with political and socially conscious lyrics in a time of Vietnam War national protests.<\/p>\n
Opening the series on Thursday, July 7, is Santana tribute band Bohemio, an Idyllwild favorite; the Creedence tribute band follows on the 14th; on July 21, another band new to ISCS is clarinetist Dan St. Marseille\u2019s Dixieland Band; on July 28, the Marine Corps sends in some of its finest; on Aug. 4, Harold Wherry and his Blue Breeze Band return to offer up some Motown motion and magic; on Aug. 11, Ken Dahleen\u2019s Big Band Staff returns; and on Aug. 18, locally renowned jazz guitarist Bob Boss comes in with his quintet. Closing the series are Lisa Haley and her Zydecats churning out some foot stompin\u2019 music that definitely turns up the heat.<\/p>\n
For all but two headliners, the Marine Band ensemble and Dahleen\u2019s Big Band Staff, there will be opening acts that begin at 6:15 p.m. The Big Band Staff and the Marines start at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
