Idyllwild resident and member of the American Legion Post 800 Honor Guard, Danielle McKnight, at right standing in military formation with her fellow midshipmen, was sworn in as a Naval Midshipman at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, after completing a demanding orientation session at which candidates were judged as suitable officer candidates for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. After taking her oath of office as a Naval Midshipman, she was awarded the anchor cap insignia (see her cap).

On Aug. 29, she starts classes at the academy, to which she was awarded a four-year scholarship, where she will major in Marine Engineering Operations. Upon graduation, McKnight is slated to become an ensign in the U.S. Navy.
