On Sunday, June 3, Pine Cove resident Mark Dean qualified for the Boston Marathon. He ran the San Diego Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in a time of 3:41:44. He needed to finish in less than 3:55 to qualify in his age category. Dean could be seen running around Idyllwild while he trained for the past 18 weeks.

Another Idyllwild resident, Ken Mello, also ran the San Diego Marathon. He finished with a time of 3:32:23.

Mello finished 500 out of 7,108 marathoners and Dean was 794. In their age groups, Dean finished 17th out of 160 and Mello was 28th out of 500.

Two Idyllwild residents ran the Rock ’n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon. Mello’s wife Heather ran a 1:48:53, which was good for 1,412 our nearly 17,600 runners. Erika Pino ran the race in 2:29:50 and finished 10,478 out of 17,600 other runners …

On Friday, May 25, former Idyllwild School student Blake Paul Sherman graduated from University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He’s headed south to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., for his residency in emergency medicine.
