Quite a stir is made about the issues (loud noise, parking, etc.) related to short-term rentals. Another issue brought up in letters to the editor is the extreme lack of long-term rentals due to the increased number of short-term rentals.
Barry Kayton and his family have been trying to relocate to Idyllwild. His daughter will be attending Idyllwild Arts Academy. They need a three- to four-bedroom home — he and his wife work from home — that allows a dog.
Due to the lack of long-term rentals that would suit their needs, they are moving to Palm Springs with the hopes of being able to move to Idyllwild soon. They saw a home late May that was not even on the market yet but it did not fit their needs. They had stayed in short-term rentals up here in hopes of finding something quickly.
The Kaytons are originally from South Africa. They moved to the Bay Area in 2013. When most of the day-to-day routine went remote, they decided to travel. From August to March, they stayed in Airbnbs in Idaho, Washington, Montana and Oregon.
Their daughter decided she wanted to go to an arts high school. They also knew they wanted to find an area to live that resembled Whitefish, Montana. After researching schools, they found Idyllwild.
An update just before press time: The Kaytons decided to buy a home in Idyllwild and are currently in escrow.
