Adopt a Senior – Christmas in Idyllwild is a community project bringing holiday cheer to local seniors who may be spending the season alone. Community members can “adopt” a senior by providing a small, thoughtful gift to be delivered by Christmas Eve. Nikki Barnes started the program after working as a Medical Assistant at the Idyllwild Health Center for the last 5 years, and seeing so many seniors up here who are alone during the holidays.
Barnes’ desire to help was given focus when her own grandmother passed away three days before Christmas last year. “It was her favorite holiday. She was a nut for Christmas.” Although the project is simple, Barnes is looking at the wider possibilities. “My ultimate goal is for this to turn into a companionship program of sorts, or even a senior center!”
Barnes is encouraging local shopping, even gift cards from the local grocers will be appreciated. Who wouldn’t like to have their groceries taken care of for a week?
Nikki told the Town Crier that the uptake has been good. “The response has been crazy. I’ve had at least 100 people reach out to me. But I’m still trying to get seniors. I’ve reached out to the Legion, Rotary, and several businesses. I’m so excited.”
The project will include bringing the gifts to the recipients. “I will be delivering all the gifts, and one of the delivery services up here reached out, and they will help with the delivery too.”
Barnes plans a Giving tree towards end of November for the reception area at the Health Center.
Seniors or those who know a senior who could use a little extra cheer can sign up through forms available at local businesses or by emailing adoptasenioridy@gmail.com.
