Josh Whitney’s Pacific Slope lumber mill on McCall Park Road in Mountain Center didn’t survive the Cranston Fire but his home did.

A wildland Fire was reported at 2:19 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Winchester, west of Hemet. The fire is 1,261 acres and is 40 percent contained as of 7:21 p.m.
Warnings were the highlight of the December Mountain Area Safety Taskforce meeting. With help from the diminishing rain in the past several years, bark beetle populations are resurging and beginning to kill more pines on the Hill. The Mountain Fire’s cause is still under investigation. The only investigative information that has been released is that the cause was an electrical equipment failure on private property. The Town Crier will report when the investigation is complete.
