According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Murawski, at 8:15 p.m. Sunday,. Marcus Vaughan Prutt, 21, and Kennett Pritchard, 21, both Marines from Camp Pendleton, were traveling westbound on Highway 74 near mile marker 72.50 at 75 to 80 mph in Prutt’s 1994 Chevy Camaro. As Prutt pulled into eastbound traffic attempting to pass Frances Ostahowski, 52, of Anza, who also was traveling westbound in her 2004 Dodge Ram, he saw John Trevino, 55, of La Quinta traveling eastbound, with his wife and daughter, in his 2010 GMC Yucon. Prutt slammed on his brakes and attempted to swerve back into the westbound lanes, clipping and pushing the Ram off the highway. Prutt lost control and collided with Trevino head on. Prutt, Ostahowski and Trevino all suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, and not transported. Trevino’s wife and daughter suffered minor to moderate injuries. Idyllwild Fire Department transported them to Desert Regional Medical Center. Pritchard, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the Camaro. Mercy Air airlifted him to Desert Regional Medical Center with major injuries. Photo by Jenny Kirchner
