RMRU will be serving a Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, August 17 at Town
Hall, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. RMRU is an all-volunteer organization, and is
a member of Mountain Rescue Association, the oldest search and rescue
organization in the US. They are often the first to hit local trails
when hikers are reported missing or injured.
RMRU is always looking for volunteers to join the team. They provide
training, and it’s not all work; they also go on Team Trips to build
relationships. Their site says the “ideal applicant would be an
accomplished mountaineer with years of experience in mountaineering,
climbing, and back country survival,” but “Rarely does anyone like this
apply.” The minimum is to be in top physical shape, and you should at
least be able to backpack overnight. Volunteers are expected to train
for certification in search and tracking, technical rock rescue, and
technical snow/ice rescue. The training is arduous, and joining is a big
commitment, they underline. But coming to the pancake breakfast is an
easy way to support the group.
RMRU often works with the crew of RSO’s Rescue 9 helicopter team. But
helicopters don’t fly in windy or cloudy conditions, and RMRU volunteers
go out in all conditions. Their website includes updates on the group’s
responses, 29 so far this year. The mission reports are sobering and
full of helpful advice; Bring a flashlight even if you don’t plan to be
out after dark, and cell phone flashlights don’t count, as they deplete
a battery quickly. Hike with a buddy and stay with your group. Don’t set
out during record-breaking heat. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and
it can be very cold up there on the peaks, and very hot on exposed lower
elevations, even on the same day. Trails are not always well marked, so
research your route before setting out.
RMRU Pancake Breakfast, Saturday August 17, 8:30-11 a.m. $10 for adults,
$5 for children. Town Hall, 25925 Cedar St. For more information visit
