he Mountain Community Fire Safe Council will present a free workshop on
homeowner’s insurance at Town Hall, Thursday September 12, from 6 to 8
p.m. A local insurance broker and representatives from the California
Department of Insurance will discuss changes to the insurance
marketplace in California, including the California Fair Plan.

There will be a presentation from the Department of Insurance on
“Sustainable Insurance Strategy.” Hemet insurance broker Bob Severns
will provide an overview of types of homeowner’s insurance policies
available, and the differences between standard market insurance,
surplus line, and the Fair Plan. He will also discuss the dangers of
being over or underinsured, and the difference between “cash value” and
“replacement cost.” Severns has given a number of talks on the hill on
these topics, and they are always “eye-openers.”

There will also be a video from United Policyholders, a group that every
homeowner struggling with understanding and navigating the insurance
market should know about (uphelp.org.). There will be time for questions
from the public.

MCFSC noted in their press release that the Idyllwild Community Center
has waived the fee for the use of Town Hall for this event.
