    Readers Write: Journalism 101

    ByIdyllwild Town Crier April 6, 2017April 19, 2017 Reading Time: 2 minutes

When I was in elementary school, we routinely turned in reports on current events as part of the social studies curriculum. To complete the assignments, we were taught to use the five Ws of journalism: Describe the who, what, where, when and why of the issue. I’d forgotten all about that aspect of my youth…

Readers Write: Silence is not an option

    ByIdyllwild Town Crier April 6, 2017April 19, 2017 Reading Time: 1 minute

Trump is the issue, just as Nixon was the issue. Trump has a complete lack of respect for those fundamental rules and institutions on which our government is based, including the judiciary, the electoral system, the intelligence agencies, government workers, the Federal Reserve and journalists. Fire and Forest: Springtime in the Mountains …

    ByNorm Walker April 6, 2017April 19, 2017 Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dr. Tom: A Brief History of the U.S. Government and Healthcare, Part I …

    ByKluzak, Tom & Kathy April 6, 2017April 19, 2017 Reading Time: 3 minutes

You will probably be surprised to learn that the first U.S. president to propose any form of government-sponsored healthcare was a Republican. OK, technically a former Republican.

Teddy Roosevelt served as our 26th president from 1901 to 1909, after which his hand-picked successor, William Howard Taft, was elected. Returning from a safari and European tour, Roosevelt found himself unimpressed with Taft’s performance and sought the Republican nomination in 1912. Rebuffed, he founded the Progressive Party, which included in its platform the provision of limited health insurance to low-wage earners. (Sorry, I know this is upsetting to modern Republicans, but it is true; look it up. You can take some solace in the Progressive Party’s alias: The Bull Moose Party).
