Rollin Gay Humber, 88, of Hemet died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Manor Care in Hemet.

Mr. Humber was born Aug. 20, 1912, in Deer Lodge, Mont. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California.

He had lived in Hemet for the past 24 years and in Blythe from 1949 to 1977.

Mr. Humber had owned Gay and Marty’s Hillbilly Variety Store in Idyllwild. He had been a partner in Idyllwild real estate with his father, Rollin Raymond Humber, for whom Humber Park is named.

He had served as an Idyllwild School board member and was instrumental in its merging with the Hemet Unified School District.

He also was a manager with the Department of Motor Vehicles for 23 years and a sergeant with the sheriff’s department in Blythe.

Mr. Humber had been an active member of the Hemet Unified Methodist Church since 1977.

He had belonged to the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge (Worthy Patron Eastern Star) of Hemet, the Associated Guardian Bethel 194 Job’s Daughters and the Rock Hound Club of Blythe.

He enjoyed fishing, camping and the great outdoors. He loved to learn about Native American artifacts.

Graveside services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Hall of the United Methodist Church of Hemet will officiate. McWane Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Humber is survived by his daughter, Cheryle Waner of Hemet; a sister, Betty Joy Dennis of Felton, Calif.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four nieces and nephews.
