Idyllwild is growing and aging. The total population for ZIP code 92549, which includes Idyllwild and Pine Cove, has grown 8 percent in the 10 years since 2000.

In 2010, nearly 300 more people lived in Idyllwild than in 2000. The 20 to 24-age group grew by 45 individuals to 161 in 2010. This was a 38.8 percent increase.

While there are 30 more youth (18 or under) residing here, the older set (50-years or older) has increased by nearly 400 people in the past 10 years.

The 65 and older set is now 21.6 percent of the total population, compared to 17.7 percent a decade ago.

The 50 to 64-year-old age group now represents a third of the community compared to a quarter 10 years ago.

More people were 65 years and over in 2010 than in any previous census. Between 2000 and 2010, the population 65 years and over increased at a faster rate (15.1 percent) than the total U.S population (9.7 percent), according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

One local population segment did contract in numbers and percentage of the total.

The portion of the population composed of working middle age adults (35-years to 49-years) fell by a third, 899 residents in 2000 down to 599 last spring. This group now represents 16.8 percent of the Hill, down from 25 percent in 2000.
