Daniel Mackie, 31, of Palm Springs began a day hike on Saturday, May 5. from the mountain station of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. While hiking above the community of Snow Creek, Mackie fell and became disoriented. Unsure of his location and how to return to the trail, Mackie used his cell phone to call for assistance.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Cabazon Station began organizing a rescue, including Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit and the Sheriff’s Aviation Unit. Around 11 a.m. the aviation unit deputies spotted Mackie and were able to land with one skid down, allowing Mackie to climb into the helicopter.
Mackie was taken to the rescue command post for medical attention for minor scrapes suffered during his fall. He was later transported back to the Palm Springs tram to join friends and return home, according to the Sheriff’s press release.
