On Friday, June 22, the Riverside County Registrar of Voters certified the totals from the June 5 primary election. The certification deadline is Wednesday, June 27.
Once again, Hill voter turnout for the June 5 primary exceeded both the statewide and countywide voter participation. The Pine Cove turnout, poll voters and vote-by-mail ballots, was 44.5 percent and Idyllwild’s turnout was slightly lower at 42.3 percent.
The county turnout was 28 percent and statewide voting totaled 32.8 percent out of more than 5.4 million ballots cast, which is 10 percent less than projections. As of Monday, June 25, only 100,000 ballots remained to be counted.
Hill voting patterns tended to reflect the overall results for most races. A few differences were noticeable.
In the Third District supervisor’s race, more than 75 percent of Idyllwild and Pine Cove voters supported incumbent Jeff Stone. In the rest of the district, he garnered 66 percent of the vote.
In the Assembly District 71 race, which is 10 percent Riverside County and 90 percent San Diego County voters, incumbent Republican Brian Jones was re-nominated to oppose Democratic newcomer, Patrick Hurley. But John McLaughlin was the leading voter getter in this county.
On the Hill, McLaughlin and Jones split votes and Hurley received the most votes, nearly half in Idyllwild.
The Proposition 29 cigarette tax vote varied among Hill communities. Anza, especially, as well as Garner Valley opposed the levy much more than countywide or statewide voters.
The Idyllwild and Pine Cove votes were much closer, similar to the overall statewide vote, which “No” is winning by only 28,000 votes out of more than 5.5 million cast.
