Last week Brendan Steele missed only his third cut on the PGA Tour this season. He shot 74-71 — 145 at The Players Championship in Florida last week, missing the cut by only one stroke. One double bogey suffered on the No. 4 hole on Friday was enough to do him in.

Still, he was at least five strokes better than either of the two times he previously had played this course.

The TPC Sawgrass course is not the most popular course on tour with the pros. Ten other players joined Steele in missing the cut by one shot last week, including big names such as Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Rickie Fowler and Jim Furyk. Ernie Els and Keegan Bradley did not fare even as well. Steele is not listed as being in the field for this week’s PGA Tour tournament in Texas.
