“Red,” an exploration of expressionist Mark Rothko, will be ISIS’ next 2013 production. John Logan’s 2010 play was a 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Play.
Originally scheduled the weekends of July 26 and Aug. 2, but postponed because of the Mountain Fire, ISIS will perform “Red” Aug. 23 and 24 in Rush Hall on the Idyllwild Arts campus.
The play is an exchange of ideas about modern art between Rothko and his assistant, Ken. This dialogue occurs during the two years after Rothko has just been commissioned — the largest in the history of modern art — to create a series of murals for New York’s Four Seasons Restaurant.
“Raw and provocative, ‘Red’ is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting,” says Suzanne Avalon, co-director and ISIS founder.
In this production, Howard Shangraw is Rothko and Joey Jennings is Ken. Shangraw and Avalon direct the production.
The performances will be 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24.
