Soroptimist International of Idyllwild has scholarship money for women furthering their education or vocational skills. Applicants must be residents of the mountain communities between Twin Pines/Poppet Flats and Anza.

The scholarships can be used for expenses at any accredited institution of higher learning when pursuing an associates, bachelors, masters or doctoral degree, or for a program resulting in either a certificate or a license. The applicants must be enrolled in one of the above programs and have made significant progress toward their goal.

Applications are posted on Soroptimist International of Idyllwild Facebook page or at BBVA Compass Bank. For women currently enrolled at either Mt. San Jacinto College or College of the Desert, Soroptimist has separate scholarships available through the respective foundations of each institution. Call Lesia Navarro at MSJC at 951-487-3590 or Peter Sturgeon at COD at 760-773-2561.

The Women’s Opportunity Award is a $500 grant awarded annually to a woman who is head of household and is furthering her education or improving her skills in order to return to the workforce. The local recipients will then be eligible to compete at the district level for more awards.

Applications are available online at www.soroptimist.org or at BBVA Compass Bank.

The club also awards two $500 grants to women in need because of their present life circumstances. These grants are funded by Mary Austin Scholarships and Grants in memory the Idyllwild Soroptimist. Educational requirement is not mandatory for these grants. Nominations for these grants can obtained from Jeri Sue Haney at BBVA Compass Bank.

For information regarding any of the above awards, call Karen Doshier at 951-452-4599.
