Unsafe speed contributed to two crashes on mountain roads over the weekend, according to Darren Meyer, California Highway Patrol public information officer.

Around 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 29, Anthony Perine, 20, of Ridgecrest was travelling east on Highway 74 at the intersection of Carrizo Road when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a sign. Perine’s 2007 Toyota Scion sustained minor damage. Perine was uninjured.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, Elton Thomas, 24, of Chino, was traveling south on Highway 243 near Round Robin Drive on a 2005 Yamaha 1000 motorcycle when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran into gravel and off the road. Unsafe speed was cited as a contributing factor. Thomas was transported by American Medical Response to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs complaining of neck and back pain.
