Many people share the religious feelings of the Thompsons, but my over 70 years of thought and research on religion provides a very different understanding.

As I have written in “From Tradition to Truth: Fear, Belief, and Civilization,” Moses, Jesus and Muhammad lived at the most tumultuous period in human history. Prior to this period, almost all people believed in more than 4,000 gods (some still do), whose presence had been determined, as early humans ran into questions of nature they could not answer. These three spoke for the simplification of 4,000-plus to the honoring in the future to a single God.

While we have much evidence for the work of Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, man’s imagination is the only evidence we have for God. So believe as you want, but others of us have no need to witness evidence for your belief.
