Brendan Steele came back with a nice 69 Saturday at the U.S. Open. He shared 2nd place for a while, but finished the day tied for 10th, five shots off the lead.

The Idyllwild native was cruising until the 526-yard, par-4 17th hole, when his second-shot approach landed long and rolled off the back of the green and down a slope. His third shot coming back didn’t carry the slope, and his ball rolled back down nearly to his feet. Shot 4 dropped dead at the top of the slope, and he two-putted from there.

Still, he posted seven birdies against two bogies and a double, for his third sub-par round, with one round remaining.

Brendan tees off in today’s closing round at 11:59 a.m. PDT.
