At 2:57 p.m. Sunday, March 4, John Devon, 50, of Palm Desert, was traveling westbound on Highway 74, east of Vista Point, on his 2010 BMW motorcycle, when he drifted into oncoming traffic. Devon was pronounced deceased at the scene by the coroner, according to California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Darren Meyer.

For reasons still under investigation, the BMW traveled into the single eastbound lane, directly in front of a Toyota. The front of the BMW struck the front of the Toyota, and the rider was ejected from the motorcycle. Susan Shoup, 57, of Pauma Valley, was driving the 2010 Toyota Prius eastbound on Highway 74.

At 7:15 a.m. Sunday, March 4, Shawn Goodwin, 58, of Hemet, was traveling on Highway 74, east of Bee Canyon, when she let her car travel off the roadway; the car then hit a cautionary sign and went into an embankment. Goodwin said her car went off the roadway because “the sun was in her eyes.” Goodwin was driving a tan Nissan Infinity Q30. She was transported by American Medical Response to Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley for non-life-threatening injuries.
