Editor:

This letter is written to correct the impression presented in your recent story of the possible dissolution of the Mountain Community Patrol. I want to assure you this volunteer organization is alive and well with plans to continue service to our beloved Idyllwild community.

It is true we need and would welcome new members and appreciate the attention you gave to MCP in this matter, but be assured we will be here today, tomorrow and beyond.

You will see our members helping with the upcoming 5/10 K runs, our traditional Fourth of July Parade, Halloween and Christmas events, too. And our service is not just in these highly visible activities, but we also quietly serve our community with random patrols looking for abandoned vehicles, suspicious activities and other safety concerns.

While we never intervene directly, as we are not sworn law enforcement officers, we pass this information on to local authorities for their evaluation and response. We also help our visitors with friendly advice on where to find trail heads, restaurants, and other businesses.

We strive to help our community be a safe haven for residents and a hospitable retreat for visitors. If anyone is interested in joining our organization or for more information, please contact President Jon Engel at [email protected].
