Cal Fire/Riverside County and Idyllwild Fire departments personnel responded to a report of an injured hiker at Humber Park at 11:37 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28. The incident occurred on the Ernie Maxwell Trail.
The patient was a 20-year-old male hiking with his family on the icy trail when he lost his footing, according to Cal Fire Capt. Katherine Garver, rescue group supervisor, of the Pine Cove Fire Station. He fell on the trail, injuring his leg.
A helicopter responded but was canceled because the canopy was too thick to consider hoisting out the patient, Garver said.
Personnel rescued the patient within about 10 minutes via the trail and Cougar Road residential area. He was carried to a waiting Idyllwild Fire ambulance by Stokes basket and transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
